WordPress 2.5 RC1 Release - It Will Change Our Lives
Ok so maybe it won’t change our lives, but it just might change the way we use our WordPress powered Web sites.
Yesterday was supposed to be the release date of WordPress 2.5. But I went to sleep without any news of WordPress 2.5 being released*. I woke up this morning and guess what I found? Yep. The WordPress 2.5 Release Candidate 1. Although they didn’t actually release the full version, I’m glad they did release at least something.
“A customizable dashboard, multi-file upload, built-in galleries, one-click plugin upgrades, tag management, built-in Gravatars, full text feeds, and faster load times sound interesting? Then WordPress 2.5 might be the release for you,” says Matt Mullenweg in his 2.5 Sneak Peak post on the WordPress development blog.
I’ve already seen some peoples’ reactions to 2.5 and for the most part, everyone seems to love it. They seem to be really enjoying the new features, especially the new Media Manager.
Make sure to download the WordPress 2.5 RC1 and give it a shot. Tell me what you think. Oh and if you feel like giving some feedback to WordPress, you can shoot over an e-mail to 2.5-feedback@wordpress.org.

I love 2.5 - it is awesome! I normally don’t upgrade to RC’s and wait for full releases. I just had to have it though. A few of my plugins didn’t work (IMP Downloads & WP Table) - but I see that IMP is no longer there and well, I can live without WP Table.
All-in-all a great release though!!! Guys at Wordpress - YOU ROCK!!!

I’m very lazy with the backend of my blog—I think I’m maybe at 2.3.1—so I’m not going to update and play with 2.5 until the full/final version is released. But I do have to say that it looks very good, and I can’t wait to see it myself.
I was also curious as to how if at all the custom fields have changed. If I have one complaint about the current backend, it’s custom fields, which seem to be getting ever more used/useful, but still hide down at the bottom. Any information on how that’s implemented would be appreciated.

@david - Yeah I won’t be upgrading WPCandy until the final version is out. I’ve just been playing around with it on my localhost.
As for custom fields, it doesn’t look like 2.5 has done any major changes with them. They’re still sort of hidden at the bottom of the Write page:

For people that don’t want to try the new version on their own server yet, a few of us WordPress developers have set up a 2.5-bleeding-edge demo site. You can try out the backend for yourself at the site, and leave a bit of feedback so we know what we can do to improve this monumental release.
The site is:
http://wp.chrisjohnston.org
If you do visit the site, please leave a comment using the “What do you think about the new WordPress?” box.
Thanks for helping out with WordPress! I’m as excited for the 2.5 release as you all are!

@Hans Engel - I stumbled upon that site a while back and every time I visited, there was always a problem, either because of spam or someone hacking it. It seems to be under control now, but the owner has placed Google Ads in the WP-Admin, ruining the true feel of the new 2.5 design. And personally, I just don’t support Google Ads anymore.

@Michael We have most of those problems fixed now, but unfortunately it won’t be as good as the real WP. But I do think it serves its purpose if people just want to see what the new interface is like.

I do not know if I like the idea of having the categories etc underneath. I would rather them be besides the main content. Its not being used and so now its just a waste of space imo

It’s already changed my life and I have yet to install the thing!

If those are screenshots from the new backend, I’m loving it. I’m not freak enough to start experimenting with it just yet though, I’ll wait till there’s a gold release…
Lemme know what you think of it Mike!

I have just tried out the new version and it looks pretty cool; some bugs were apparent but I expect all should be fine and dandy when the proper version releases. It’s a shame it’s a bit delayed but I hope it will be worth the wait.
Regarding custom fields, you can click-and-drag the panels about on the WordPress ‘write post’ page.

I tried the new version, but couldn’t see anything that makes blogging a lot easier or a lot faster. Nothing revolutionary.

YES! This looks SIIIIIIIIIICK! I cannot wait. No more plugins to make the WordPress backend look good. It will look good on its own!
