Ok so maybe it won’t change our lives, but it just might change the way we use our WordPress powered Web sites.
Yesterday was supposed to be the release date of WordPress 2.5. But I went to sleep without any news of WordPress 2.5 being released*. I woke up this morning and guess what I found? Yep. The WordPress 2.5 Release Candidate 1. Although they didn’t actually release the full version, I’m glad they did release at least something.
“A customizable dashboard, multi-file upload, built-in galleries, one-click plugin upgrades, tag management, built-in Gravatars, full text feeds, and faster load times sound interesting? Then WordPress 2.5 might be the release for you,” says Matt Mullenweg in his 2.5 Sneak Peak post on the WordPress development blog.
I’ve already seen some peoples’ reactions to 2.5 and for the most part, everyone seems to love it. They seem to be really enjoying the new features, especially the new Media Manager.
Make sure to download the WordPress 2.5 RC1 and give it a shot. Tell me what you think. Oh and if you feel like giving some feedback to WordPress, you can shoot over an e-mail to 2.5-feedback@wordpress.org.

I love 2.5 – it is awesome! I normally don’t upgrade to RC’s and wait for full releases. I just had to have it though. A few of my plugins didn’t work (IMP Downloads & WP Table) – but I see that IMP is no longer there and well, I can live without WP Table.
All-in-all a great release though!!! Guys at WordPress – YOU ROCK!!!

I was also curious as to how if at all the custom fields have changed. If I have one complaint about the current backend, it’s custom fields, which seem to be getting ever more used/useful, but still hide down at the bottom. Any information on how that’s implemented would be appreciated.

@david – Yeah I won’t be upgrading WPCandy until the final version is out. I’ve just been playing around with it on my localhost.
As for custom fields, it doesn’t look like 2.5 has done any major changes with them. They’re still sort of hidden at the bottom of the Write page:

@Hans Engel – I stumbled upon that site a while back and every time I visited, there was always a problem, either because of spam or someone hacking it. It seems to be under control now, but the owner has placed Google Ads in the WP-Admin, ruining the true feel of the new 2.5 design. And personally, I just don’t support Google Ads anymore.

I do not know if I like the idea of having the categories etc underneath. I would rather them be besides the main content. Its not being used and so now its just a waste of space imo

Regarding custom fields, you can click-and-drag the panels about on the WordPress ‘write post’ page.
