WordPress Community News #4

It’s been a while since I’ve written a post due to my lack of internet access while away on vacation. What’s a vacation without sitting back, putting your feet up on a random coffee table somewhere, and browsing the web using Wifi? Pfft, not a vacation at all. Anyways, as soon as I got back (and bought a new 85-watt MacBook charger since I somehow misplaced my other one) I checked my RSS feeds and was overloaded with tons of new WordPress news! Here’s a wrap-up of what’s going on in the WordPress Community these days.

WordPress 2.5 Released!

As announced today by Matt Mullenweg at WordCamp Dallas, Automattic has officially released WordPress 2.5, along with their new site design!

What’s new in WordPress 2.5? The biggest change you’ll see is the new administration theme, designed by HappyCog. The new theme definitely streamlines and simplifies the WordPress interface a lot. It also includes a customizable dashboard, built-in galleries (hallelujah!!), built-in Gravatars, and even faster loading speeds.

This build of WordPress is looking more fantastic than ever! Let’s give a huge thanks to the developers and designers at WordPress for a great release!

WordPress 2.5 is available for download over at Wordpress.org. And if you’re a WordPress.com user, fear not, you will receive an update to 2.5 in the next week.

As for WPCandy, we will be upgrading to 2.5 soon, as well as making sure our WPCandy v1 WordPress Theme is compatible. Stay tuned for more news on 2.5.

Automattic’s WordPress Publisher Blog

Automattic has just released the WordPress Publisher Blog, a new blog “aimed at helping publishers get the most out of WordPress.” Various members of the Automattic team will be covering “features that are often overlooked”, “highlight plugins that extend WordPress functionality”, and “showcase interesting sites being built with WordPress.”

Well, what’s Automattic? Automattic is “a startup from a handful of people passionate about making the web a better place.” They’re a bunch of cool peeps who’ve worked on projects such as WordPress, bbPress, Askimet, Gravatar, and some sweet plugins.

There’s not much going on over at the blog yet, but if there are any interesting articles published over there, I’ll make sure to let you all know!
