WordPress Theme Review: Blue 1.0

ThemeVibes has a definite…well, vibe, for creating WordPress themes. Blue 1.0, an installment in their Rockstar Series, is a shining example of fresh WordPress design. It’s just too bad the theme isn’t quite finished.

Validation 3/5

While the CSS technically validates, it rang up with 24 warnings concerning colors / background colors being the same. This isn’t really an extreme issue by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s a little annoying that this wasn’t caught in the validation stage.

Two XHTML errors popped up during validation as well. Both had to do with strange sidebar and <H2> actions. Again, a simple look over the validation pages would have (probably) meant both of these items would be fixed.

Look & Feel 5/5

Like I said above, this is a very fresh theme. The colors pop and the image makes you want to look at it. I am, personally, a little taken back by the post backgrounds. They feel a little over the top and unnecessary for the theme.

Oh, and the orange link colors kind of come out of nowhere. It would have been nice to see that color incorporated into the design a bit more.

(Notice no points were taken off. I try not to take points off for my own subjective likes and dislikes.)

Theme Completeness 2/5

This is unfortunately where the theme drops the ball. The attachment.php and 404 template are both (apparently) broken, however they seem to work. Since these pages don’t seem to carry the weight that the rest of the theme does, I’m going to go ahead and assume they were forgotten about. −2

Oh, and no search bar. You just have to have a search bar. −1

Editablity 5/5

Their system for commenting style sheets works. The average designer could easily traverse the code.

I might diagnose div-itis in some places of their XHTML. By this a mean a whole lot of divs were used in the making of this theme. However no tables were harmed, so I suppose I should choose my battles, right?

Oh, and I did happen to find an “Edit” link when logged in to the site. But it was only on the single post view. How odd is that?

I can’t really complain about this one. Overall it’s not a bad theme. For many the look will be reason enough to install it. But I would be wary of the lack of theme template files; too many are broken or missing for my peace of mind. If you use it, look into fine tuning it yourself (or find a friend who can).
