The WordPress theme shop WPZoom, lead by Pavel Ciorici and his team, has acquired competing theme shop ProudThemes. ProudThemes launched a little over a year ago, but sought a buyout from WPZoom when it couldn’t quite keep up with the competitive WordPress theme market.
The team at WPZoom has decided to refactor and re-release six of ProudThemes’ eleven released themes, with one of them released for free. The other five themes will be discontinued. ProudThemes’ affiliate program has been migrated to WPZoom as well, so any old accounts and links will need to be migrated, or they will no longer work.
The exact acquisition price isn’t known, but WPZoom responded to WPCandy’s requests for more information by informing us that the price had four digits. Assuming there weren’t any decimal points in it, this means ProudThemes sold for somewhere between $1,000 and $9,999.
This is the first theme shop that I can remember being acquired by a competitor, particularly due to a tough theme market. Do you think we’ll see more buyouts like this, or can the WordPress theme market support as many theme shops as there are today?
