Josh Benham of the PluginBuddy team has released his first plugin. It’s called Tipsy, and allows you to easily create content-rich tooltips for your site. Instead of just text, Tipsy allows you to add tooltips with things like YouTube videos, Flickr photo galleries and Slideshare presentations (just to name a few).

If you want to use a Tipsy tooltip, all you have to do is create a “group” and set up the content you want to use. If you would rather do it on the fly, you can also use shortcodes. Watch the Tipsy overview video just after the jump to see how it works.

Tipsy is available as a stand-alone plugin and as a part of the DisplayBuddy Suite.

Have you ever used tooltip effects like this? If so, what techniques have you used?

I must say that I was very interested in this plugin, but their website, pluginbuddy.com is very frustrating. They say they have 3 levels of membership and when you click to find out that most essential of questions: how much, there is no price, link or anywhere to go except for their Developer membership (the most expensive of course).

Sorry for the rant but this is a valid issue that sites like this need to pay attention to. I tried their chat support and the person directed me to ithemes.com. After several messages back and forth I gave up. Still have no clue about membership.

    1. Robert, sorry for your frustration ….. if you go to the Tipsy sales page, you’ll see a buy now button … click that and it tabs to the pricing ($25, $45, $70).

More information on what the plans include is here:

  2. I can see some pretty neat uses for this in terms of creating documentation, for instance. Hover or click tooltips on topics could give you tooltips with embedded videos or screenshots, etc. Interesting.
