Page.ly gets themely with a stat sheet showing usage numbers

Page.ly has released an infographic that illustrates the theme usage across the thousands of their hosted WordPress sites. A number of interesting stats jump out:

  • 37% of Page.ly hosted sites use a theme unique to that site
  • 14.35% of Page.ly hosted sites use the Twenty Ten theme
  • 11.89% of Page.ly hosted sites are using the Genesis theme

These stats don’t include Page.ly’s reseller or partner sites.

You can view the full Page.ly theme stat sheet on their blog. Do any of the stats surprise you? Do you think many of their Twenty Ten users will be switching to Twenty Eleven when it comes out with WordPress 3.2 soon?

  1. Think the Twenty Eleven switch is more or less inevitable with all the different post formats and other optimizations / features. Not to mention, it’s just really well done 🙂

  2. 11.89% of Page.ly hosted sites are using the Genesis theme and I’m one of them.

By the way, how do they track the number of users using a certain theme? By tracking the numbers of downloaded themes or by tracking the name of the theme they use? Both ways still have lack of accuracy.

    • we ran queries against all the user databases for wp_options “template” and “stylesheet”.
The template is the theme and/or framework. The stylesheet is the theme, or child theme 99% of the time.

We have a lot more data we will put together in another post some time in the future. We can answer questions like “what themes do the most ‘commented’ sites use”, and “what themes do the most traffic heavy sites use” etc.

We have data on plugins and just about any other question you want to ask.. we’ll be do a series of the these ‘page.ly by the numbers’ inforgaphics over the next few months.
