The next version of Moodle, the popular open source learning management system, will integrate Gravatar support for avatars in the next major release. The decision, including the (lengthy) discussion around the decision, can be seen on Moodle’s development tracking system. It will be a new feature in Moodle version 2.2, which is scheduled for release on the first of December this year.
Gravatar is a free service run by Automattic that allows the management of globally recognized avatars, and has done so since version two launched in February of 2007. Gravatar was later acquired by Automattic in October of 2007.
