In a post on the official BuddyPress blog, John James Jacoby revealed he is leading an initiative to convert bbPress from a standalone platform into a WordPress plugin. Regarding the purpose behind this initiative, Jacoby commented:
“Our goal with me giving some attention to the bbPress plugin project is to keep it tightly integrated with BuddyPress, but have them act totally independently or alone if necessary.”
bbPress has been bundled with BuddyPress since BuddyPress v1.1, but the integration, according to Jacoby, has received both mixed feedback and mixed results. The initiative will see both a bbPress plugin and a BuddyPress plugin operating separately, but with mutual awareness. This setup will allow BuddyPress developers to create forums for any object, component or plugin.
bbPress v1.2 is expected to be stable enough for testing by September with an official release by the end of the year.
