9seeds released a new free plugin called WP Chargify

9seeds logo9seeds has released a free plugin called WP Chargify. WP Chargify hides content from non-paid members and utilizes the Chargify recurring billing and payment system.

9seeds is a WordPress development shop, and they do a lot of custom plugin work. John Hawkins, co-founder of 9seeds, went into detail about how this plugin came about in the release post. Basically, they created WP Chargify for a client and were paid for the efforts, but the plugin never made it into the real world. The client and the folks at 9seeds discussed it and they agreed to release it for free to the greater WordPress community. Talk about a nice client!

John also says in the post that they will monitor the support forum, but because it is free, they won’t be able to provide dedicated support. He goes on to describe his hopes for the future of the plugin:

Hopefully another developer will find it, be able to make use of it and eventually take over continuing development on the project. If we can give that developer a head start with the code we’ve already written than it’s totally worth it.

This isn’t 9seeds only free plugin. They are also responsible for WP Event Ticketing, Ads for Old Posts, LOLPress, and Custom Post Type: Speakers. Learn about these and their premium plugin, WP Affiliate Manager, on their plugin page.

It’s pretty cool to see a project gain life even though its usage isn’t what was originally planned. So, kudos to the 9seeds crew and Jason Glaspey, the client, for sharing your work with all of us!

I don’t know how good Chargify service is, but yeah, I bet a lot of membership plugin developers would benefit from checking out WP-Chargify’s code in implementing support for Chargify in their own membership plugins. Recurring billing is an integral part of all of WordPress’ membership plugins.
