Latest about Jeff Starr

The folks at Smashing Magazine have added a WordPress section to their popular site this week. The new WordPress tab joins their Coding and UX Design tabs, which each represent a different focus the blog has.

Jeff Starr was announced editor of the new section as well. You might remember Starr as the person who co-authored Digging into WordPress with Chris Coyier. In the announcement post yesterday, Starr described the drive behind the new Smashing Magazine WordPress section:

In recent years, it seems WordPress has been growing at an exponential rate. It’s also become amuch better piece of software, almost becoming a transparent experience to the user, who can set up a beautiful, fully functional site or CMS in minutes. There are many user-focused sites that will help with the basics, but as you get further into WordPress, the list of reliable resources on more advanced topics grows thin. This presents an opportunity…

But the Smashing folks haven’t stopped with Starr. It seems Justin Tadlock will also be augmenting his DevPress blogging with a bit of blogging on the new Smashing Magazine WordPress section. It’s probably safe to assume they will be recruiting other well known community members to contribute as well.

Are you excited to see Smashing devote time to WordPress, particularly on more advanced topics? Are you a regular reader of Smashing Magazine?

Earlier this year authors Jeff Starr and Chris Coyier closed down their affiliate program for their book Digging into WordPress. They closed it down because they discovered a good deal of fraud and abuse under the old system.

As of last Thursday the affiliate program has been relaunched, now using ClickBank and a 50% commission for book sales. For more information about the setup, and to get signed up for it, see the post on the DigWP blog.

Have you read Digging into WordPress? Would you recommend it to a fellow WordPress lover, affiliate program or not?

Digging into WordPress

Digging Into WordPress, a book by Chris Coyier and Jeff Starr, has been updated to include new features of WordPress 3.1. Digging Into WordPress is a 400+ page WordPress resource that the guys self publish. Scores of people will vouch for it as an impeccable resource for any developer.

The new edition includes what they call a “complete guide” to 3.1, an improved chapter on the Loop, and some general tweaks to “improve overall quality and accuracy.”

As in the past, they are offering DigWP in two ways, via hard copy or pdf. The pdf is available now for $27, and includes lifetime updates and some free themes. Free updates is no small feature, I’ll add, as they are currently on revision 8. The hard copy isn’t quite ready, but will be full color, spiral bound, and include a downloadable copy of the pdf and other features.

As an added bonus, they’re giving away a straggling copy of DigWP 3.0, which has sold out, to a lucky commenter on the blog post.

So, do you own Digging Into WordPress already, or other WordPress books? If not, what’s the holdup?

Digging into WordPress 3.0 is now available in paperback. Due to the high cost of the quality of the printing, the authors (Chris Coyier and Jeff Starr) print limited runs of the book at a time, so don’t wait too long if you really want one.

Books are now shipping internationally as well, with the price at $70 plus shipping and handling. Each book include a free copy of the PDF, which itself will be updated for free with each new version of the book.

Digging into WordPress, by Chris Coyier and Jeff Starr, is available in its third edition today as a PDF download only for $27.

The new edition includes an updated design and new information on WordPress 3.0. Printed versions, according to Starr, may be available in September or October.

Coyier and Starr began publishing Digging into WordPress via their website DigWP.com in 2009. You can follow Coyier on Twitter @chriscoyier and Starr @perishable.
