One thing you can pretty much be guaranteed: if you artistically immortalize something in the WordPress family as an animal, we will highlight your work on this blog. It’s just going to happen.
This week’s edition of community links brings a number of interesting reads, some pro-level tutorials, and a number of resources you’ll want to hold on to. What more could you want?
Let’s get straight to the links.
First up are good ‘ole fashioned blog posts:
- A new web comic has started up called Web Boy that, in its first issue (part of which is shown above), has Akismet the dog running off the spam crows. All he needs now is a supply of WPCandy in his utility belt and he’ll be good to go, amirite?
- You can catch up on last week’s dev chat in this summary.
- Siobhan Ambrose interviewed Scribu on the WMPU.org blog.
- Remkus de Vries, besides having my new favorite name of all time, also wrote up a blog post about giving back to the WordPress community.
- A few new sites started up recently as well. WPSecure is a new WordPress security-focused blog. VoodooPress is a new WordPress tutorial blog that features a cute-as-voodoo-dolls-can-be voodoo doll mascot. Finally James Agate has started up a new email-only blog at WPSmarts, for theme and plugin developers.
Next we have a few tutorials to amp up that brain of yours:
- WPBeginner has a post up that goes in to good detail on newsletters with WordPress blogs.
- Sarah Gooding shared how to extend the auto logout period within WordPress.
- Ryan Taylor of .net magazine wrote up a guide to WordPress post formats. (via WPTavern)
- Briley Kenney wrote up a tutorial showing how to create content for members only within a WordPress install.
- The BP Tricks blog has a guide to setting up BuddyPress with MaxCDN and W3 Total Cache.
- Wes Bos put together a tutorial showing how to list posts by category on a WordPress page.
And finally, a few items you might want to bookmark for future use:
- JR Farr posted a collection of magazine themes on Mojo Themes.
- Press Coders has released a set of free WordPress HD video tutorials.
- Nathan B Weller put together a list of themes that could be used for travel blogs.
- Oli Dale has assembled a list of high quality, recently released, personal blog themes.
- WPBeginner has a collection of Tumblr style WordPress themes.
- Edublogs, one of the longest-running WordPress Multisite installations on the web, has released their bbPress theme for free to download.
Thatβs it for this weekβs community links. If you have a link you think should be in our weekly roundup, please doΒ contact us.
Thanks a ton for the link, Ryan! Keep up the great work here π
Thanks for the kind mention Ryan π Always appreciate the love.
Awesome stuff. Cool piece by Nathan
Some pretty valuable links here! I know I was just able to find a few themes to recommend to clients! Good post as always Ryan!
I’d love to take credit for the name, but really I had no influence on that π Thanks for the mention Ryan, appreciate that!
Thank you very much for the mention! Hoping to provide some valuable info over on VoodooPress. I’m especially glad you like the voodoo doll! He doesn’t have a name yet, thinking about making that our first contest. WPCandy is my morning coffee read, it was awesome to see the mention, keep up the good posts!
I’m looking forward to more from the Web Boy Comic, it’s pretty cool! Plus another nice selection of links from the community over the past week or so Ryan! π
Thanks Mark! With Web Boy and Wooville, I’m beginning to think WPCandy needs a comic of its own.
Oh it totally should have one; might be the only comic I’ll ever appear in? π
Haha you guys stay on top of everything! I made myself a note to NOT forget to submit my BuddyPress CDN tutorial, but before I knew it it was Sunday. Totally forgot about it, started reading my RSS feeds on my iPhone today.. and there it is. Thanks!
I also enjoyed pretty much all of the other links. It’s great to receive fresh and useful Community links every week π
Thanks for the kind words Bowe, I had your link added to the WPCandy Ideas Blog the day you wrote it I believe, or close enough? Glad you’re enjoying the Community Links, I’ll maybe write next weeks edition, give Ryan the week off! π
Thanks for shout-out guys.
It’s boring to read the exploit posts so sign up to my twitter https://twitter.com/#!/wpsecurenet so you can be notified if a plugin your using has any security issues.
Cheers.
