| Ryan Imel | A thread on WPTavern prompted me to think a bit about our editorial policy this week, and since it’s the end of the year (and I don’t want to hijack the original poster’s thread at the Tavern forums) I figured a reflection thread would be worthwhile. WPCandy’s editorial policy specifies that we cover GPL and split-licensed GPL plugins and themes. I made this decision some time ago for a number of reasons, but it’s also a decision I struggle with at times. The GPL is important to the community, and being a part of it often requires sticking to it (right or wrong, that seems to be how it works). I recognize its importance within the community, and even personally agree with many of the ideals. Perhaps having a proper site focused on this community should respect the community’s decision. At the same time, at times I think restricting the software we’ll report on at WPCandy to a specific license is a bit silly. We aspire to proper journalism in the things that we do here, and limiting your potential stories according to a license doesn’t really jive with that goal. Ultimately I’m interested in doing my job for you guys, the readers and members of our little community here. So I’d like to know what your thoughts are. Should WPCandy, as a community of WordPress folks, only cover software that sticks to the General Public License? |

| Norcross | hard to say. I guess a big factor would be a snapshot of what we’re “missing” because of the policy. because most of the time, the non-GPL (full or split) WP products out there aren’t much to look at anyway, so it’s no harm no foul. and let’s not forget the subsequent flame war that can break out. |

| Chris Aprea | I wouldn’t mind see non-GPL news on wpcandy. To make everyone happy you could have a filter that allows people to hide articles regarding non-GPL products. Engadget are doing this here: http://www.engadget.com/exclude/apple/ (hide articles relating to apple) |
