The WP Late Night crew (that’s myself, Brad Williams, and Dre Armeda) are recording episode three of the show tonight live on the WPCandy Stream. The show will start at 8pm EST, so don’t forget to set those alarm clocks fancy iPhone alarm apps whatever the cool kids are using nowadays.

Until then, why not catch up on WP Late Night episodes one and two? Episode two is part of the current WPCandy Stream playlist, so you could just hang out there too.

The first issue of The WPCandy Quarterly magazine is just around the corner. In anticipation of its release (I’m eagerly awaiting it too!) I’ve put together a sample of the first issue for you. It’s  Andy Stratton’s article, SEO, Diet Pills and Theme Frameworks.

I could easily say that Andy’s article is one of my favorites within this first issue, but that wouldn’t be entirely true. This magazine is, in fact, filled to the brim with my favorite articles. I’ve linked the PDF up just after the jump.

I’ll be sitting down with Automattician and Theme Wrangler Lance Willett this afternoon to discuss the growth of commercial themes on WordPress.com in the last year. We’ll be recording at 18 UTC on the Stream, so feel free to join in the (newly revamped) stream and chat room if you can.

It was around this time last year that Automattic announced they would introduce commercial themes on WordPress.com. Around that time I also spoke with Lance then about the news, so it will be fun to touch base with him again about it.

If you have any questions about paid themes on WordPress.com, or anything that would fall under the purview of a Wrangler1, drop a note in the comments and I’ll be sure to ask him.

  1. Purview of a Wrangler, as it turns out, would be an awesome indie band name. Or a book. Or a blog. Dang, someone really needs to use that name for something.

The first issue of The WPCandy Quarterly is in the printing queue as you read these words. Exciting, right? Since there’s nothing I can do to speed up the process (believe me, I would if I could) I’ve taken some time and looked back over the first issue’s development.

One thing I did, while the design process of the Quarterly moved along, was save several drafts. There were nearly 50 individual design drafts of this issue, actually (we drafted articles separately with the individual authors).

Since the drafts were interesting, I put together a quick video showing a few stages of development for various pages within the Quarterly. In the video you get to see the pages when they weren’t much more than words on a page, when they changed formats and styles, and then what they eventually become. I had fun making it, so I hope you enjoy watching it.

I’ve embedded the video below, just after the jump.

The WPCandy Quarterly is, as far as I know, the first-ever WordPress-centric magazine. Or rather, it will be when it begins shipping out to subscribers in the next week or so. On Friday I received the final print proofs, which wraps up the last necessary step before all the issue are printed and delivered.

I’ve dropped in a few photos of the proof sheets below. Of course I’m a bit biased, but I think this issue looks fantastic. I’ll have more to share about the production process next week, but I just couldn’t help sharing this update now. I’m pretty excited to see this coming together.

Remember, we have a limited number of issues. Pick one up today to be sure you have one of the first issues of the Quarterly.

I’m excited to announce that we’ve begun the last stage of production on the first issue of The WPCandy Quarterly. The issue’s files are with the printer now, and barring any last-minute issues we should see printing begin in the next couple of days.

In other words: the wait is just about over, and all orders will shortly be fulfilled. The magazine is 60 pages filled to the proverbial brim with articles from some of the smartest people in the WordPress community. Personally I can’t wait until you see what we’ve all been working on.

The WP Late Night crew is back for another episode! Tonight at 8pm EST Ryan, Brad (that’s me), and Dre will be recording their second episode of the video podcast LIVE! As always you can watch the recording on the WPCandy Stream.

We’ll see you guys tonight!

This might be a little bit of inside baseball, but I found it interesting. AddThis, the social stat tracking service that I’ve used on WPCandy for a little while now, sent out info graphics to publishers today that show just how visitors shared content in 2011. I received my info graphic just a few minutes ago, courtesy of Aaron Jorbin.

Even though I’ve already posted our year in review and 2011′s tag clouds, I went ahead and published the info graphic, in full, just after the jump.

In addition to WPCandy’s 2011 in Review (which went up a few minutes ago, seriously go read it) I thought it would be fun to offer another round of tag clouds for 2011.

So here’s what I did: I generated tag clouds for the various taxonomies used on WPCandy. I chose categories, people, companies and events. Then I copied the HTML into this post so we can all see the breakdown of coverage, a sort of snapshot, at this point in time. We have the coverage page as well, but I particularly like where posting these clouds show changes in emphasis from 2010 to 2011.

I’m excited to announce a new project called WP Late Night, a video podcast co-hosted by Dre Armeda, Brad Williams, and yours truly. The show will be a regular roundtable discussion on noteworthy and timely topics in the WordPress community. Also: tacos.

You likely know Dre Armeda from his work at Sucuri Security and CubicTwo, as well as his work organizing WordCamp San Diego. It also turns out he’s also a fan of WordPress, in case you weren’t aware.

Brad Williams is probably best known as the founder of WebDevStudios and author of Professional WordPress and Professional WordPress Plugin Development. He also organizes WordCamp Philly.

And then there’s me. So, I promise I’ll mostly just let them talk.

Tune in

Head to the WPCandy Stream at 8PM EST tonight for the recording of the first episode. We hope you can make it, but If you can’t don’t worry—the episode will end up landing here a few hours afterward anyway.
